Are payday loans confidential?

A lot of people are embarrassed at the idea of having to take out a payday loan. They really don't want anybody to know that they needed one. This raises the question of just how confidential are these loans. The sign on the door usually says they are but what does that really mean. Before you take out a payday loan it is a good idea to find out.

Whether or not payday loans are confidential is going to depend in large part on where you get them. If you get the loan in person then they generally are but even here there is no guarantee. This is something that you should keep in mind, there is no law requiring that they be kept confidential so you do have to rely on the lender. In most cases they will be if for no other reason than that there is little reason that the lender would tell anybody but there is no guarantee.

If you get your payday loan online then things get a little bit more complicated. The problem is that the lender has to verify your employment and income before they can grant you the loan. This used to be done having you fax a pay stub but with most people not having a fax machine these days lenders have had to find other ways to do this. Normally the way they do it is by calling your employer. The say that they are discreet when they call but it is hard to see how they can do this, it seems unlikely that your employer would give the required information out without knowing who was asking and why. Therefore if you get your loan online you probably shouldn't expect it remain confidential.

There is one thing that will virtually guarantee that your loan will not remain confidential and that is if you don't pay it back. You can be sure that the lender will take steps to collect the loan which means that it will appear on your credit report. There is also a good chance that it will be referred to a collection agency. In either case you can be sure that it will not remain confidential as all of this will be available publicly for anybody who goes looking for it.

If you are worried about your payday loan remaining confidential it is best to not use them since there are no guarantees. That being said the stigma of payday loans is not what it used to be as they are now fairly widely used. Besides in most cases somebody would have to go looking for the information to find out if you had taken one out. If you need a payday loan you shouldn't worry too much about it unless you have a legitimate reason that you need to keep it secret.
